Pigmentation disorders, specifically melasma/chloasma, affect almost exclusively women. In addition to hormonal discolorations, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation is a difficult condition to treat, presenting even bigger challenges for Fitzpatrick Skin Types 4, 5 and 6. In this class, we will look behind the formations of hormonal skin discolorations and post-inflammatory skin conditions. Advanced skin physiology with an emphasis on melanocyte formation will be presented. In addition, the endocrine system will be discussed, highlighting hormones that affect pigmentation disorders. We will also review the Fitzpatrick Scale as applied to advanced lightening treatments for ethnic skin. Examples of ingredients, treatments and modalities will be discussed, with full understanding of concerns, contraindications and side effects as applied to darker skin tones.
